Electrophysiology studies
An EP study is a test used to evaluate your heart's electrical system and abnormal heart rhythms.
Your health care provider may advise an EP study for the following reasons:
- To evaluate symptoms such as dizziness, fainting, weakness, palpitation or others to see if they might be caused by a rhythm problem when other tests have not been clear
- To locate the source of a heart rhythm problem
- To see how well medicines given to treat a rhythm problem are working
There may be other reasons for your health care provider to recommend an EP study.
Procedures include:
- Ablations
- Cardiac resynchronization devices
- Cardioversion
- Defibrillator implantation, including both traditional and subcutaneous devices
- Electrophysiological studies
- Hybrid maze (convergent) procedure
- Implantable loop recorders
- Left atrial appendage implant
- Pacemaker insertion
- Syncope evaluation
- Tilt table testing
- Ultrafast computed tomography (CT) scan
